PowerPod-LANC: A special PowerPod for SONY, CANON, PANASONIC cameras with LANC remote connecters

PowerPod

The PowerPod-LANC is a compact motorized base that pans and tilts a camcorder under your computer's control. In addition, the PowerPod-LANC includes technology to control optical zoom and focus via the LANC connector found on many Sony, Canon, and Panasonic camcorders.

The PowerPod-LANC's combination of features make it a great choice for Sony owners interested in using their camcorders for computerized surveillance and webcamming. Robotic pan and tilt mean you conduct surveillance over a large space with a single camera that you point at different spots as needed. Or, use it as a hi-res webcam and move around the room freely while the camcorder follows you. Optical zoom control keeps the video quality sharp and professional, no matter how far away the subject is from the camera.

Features

The PowerPod-LANC has all the features of the regular PowerPod, but also includes technology to control the optical zoom of Sony camcorders via LANC. PowerPod-LANC handles camcorders up to 3 lbs in weight and connects to your computer via USB. Your camcorder's video signal connects separately via either Firewire, composite video connector or other method of your choice.

The PowerPod-LANC lets you:

  • Turn and swivel your camcorder on the fly from your PC
  • Controls lens zoom and focus from your PC
  • Remotely control motion and zoom over the Internet
  • Detect and track motion
  • Move through a series of preset positions
  • Capture video to disk
  • Capture still images at regular intervals
  • View captured images over the Internet

What is LANC?

LANC is a connector found on Sony camcorders, and some camcorders from other manufacturers, that can accept lens control instructions. To check if your camcorder has the LANC connector that makes zoom control possible, look for for a small jack similar to a headphone connector, usually labelled with a stylized 'L.'

LANC is a wired remote communication interface developed by the Sony Corporation and is found primarily on Sony camcorders and some Canon camcorders.

LANC (or Remote) compatible camcorders have one of the following two interface connectors:
1. An older, 2.5mm mini-plug jack generally marked as LANC, REMOTE, L, or Control-L.
2. A newer, multi-function 10-pin terminal marked as A/V Remote (A/V R) or sometimes A/V or A/V Out.
Both interfaces are supported and available in our Electronic AquaCam HDX Video Housings. Refer to your camcorder user's manual for LANC/Remote compatibility.

If you are looking at current Sony camcorder specifications (at SonyStyle.com or in your user's manual), look for "A/VRemote Terminal" under Connections and/or "Remote" in the list of Functions on that A/V terminal. Unfortunately, Sony is not consistent in listing the "Remote" Function under the "A/V Remote terminal," but the designation of "Remote" in the terminal name generally means the Remote Function is present.

Below is a guide listing of LANC/Remote Compatible Camcorder Models (HD/SD Digital and Analog) compiled from data gathered off the Internet. The very latest models may not be listed yet and the list may not show all compatible model numbers. This listing is sorted in alpha-numeric order and Sony camcorders are grouped by Series (i.e. DCR and HDR series).

Note: Camcorders with the A/V-Remote terminal are listed below in Blue, and those with a 2.5mm LANC/Remote jack are listed in Black.

Old-Analog Hi8 and 8mm Camcorders with LANC jacks

Most 8mm and older-model Hi8 camcorders manufactured by the following will likely have a standard LANC jack: Sony, Canon, Nikon, Ricoh, Hitachi, Yashika, Sanyo, Olympus, Blaupunkt, Grundig, Fujix, Kyocera, Siemens, Fisher, and possibly other makes.
Note: the most recent Hi8 camcorder models (manufactured until a few years ago) generally do not have a LANC jack.

You should further verify if a particular 8mm or older-model Hi8 camcorder actually has a LANC jack (most do - some don't).

Note to Canon owners: If your camcorder uses Firewire (IEEE 1394) for video output, you can use our regular PowerPod to control the camcorder's optical zoom via Firewire.

Canon owners please also note: Canon is seems to phasing out Firewire 400 with it's newer HD cameras, and has again begun to offer optical zoom control, through LANC, on many of it's newer camcorders.

A LANC port may be either built into the camera, or offered as a optional module that clips into the camera's "mini smart shoe".
